Loneliness: The Joy of Connecting with Others

Loneliness is something many of us experience at different stages of life, but for a growing number of adults in London, it’s a regular, painful reality. Life changes like children moving away, losing loved ones, or simply the natural ebb and flow of friendships can leave people feeling isolated. If you’ve ever felt alone, even in a bustling city like London, you’re not alone – and there’s something we can do about it.

Why Loneliness Affects So Many Adults

As we get older, social circles tend to shift. Many older adults experience the heartbreak of losing friends or partners, and when children move to new cities, a once-busy family home can suddenly feel very empty. For adults of all ages, balancing careers, family commitments, and personal lives can leave little room for making new friends or reconnecting with old ones.

And though these are natural stages of life, when isolation continues unchecked, it can affect both mental and physical health. Research has shown that ongoing loneliness can lead to higher risks of anxiety, depression, memory problems, and even heart disease.

Meeting New People

Humans are naturally social. Meeting new people, no matter your age, can be one of the most refreshing ways to find a sense of belonging again. Making new friends or even just meeting others for casual activities can bring back feelings of joy and purpose. In a safe, supportive environment, socializing feels less intimidating – you can be yourself without any expectations.

This is why social activities are such a powerful way to re-engage with the world around you. Our weekly sessions offer friendly, pressure-free spaces where you can relax, meet others, and rediscover how good it feels to be part of a community.

Social Activities Can Boost Wellbeing

At Capable Communities, we understand the toll that loneliness can take, which is why we’re dedicated to providing weekly social activities for adults across Harrow. Each session is an opportunity to connect in a welcoming, inclusive setting, with a range of activities to suit everyone. Whether you want to try some gentle exercise, play a board game and enjoy a warm conversation over a cup of tea, our activities offer an easy way to feel less alone.

Some of the ways these sessions benefit attendees include:

  1. Lifting Mood: Regular social interaction can significantly reduce stress and symptoms of depression.
  2. Encouraging Movement: Many activities incorporate gentle physical exercise, from seated exercise to light yoga which can improve both physical and mental health.
  3. Mental Stimulation: Taking part in conversations or learning new things keeps the mind active and engaged.
  4. Building Community: Consistently attending our weekly activities foster a sense of belonging and make it easier to form friendships over time.

Connection: The Key to Happiness

There’s real power in connecting with others. Simple, meaningful conversations can create a sense of relief and joy that is hard to find alone. Studies show that people who engage in regular social activities feel happier, healthier, and more fulfilled. We witness this every day – we see people walk in feeling uncertain and leave with a smile, having shared stories, laughed and feeling more positive about life.

Take the First Step

If you or someone you know in London is feeling isolated, our weekly activities could be the perfect opportunity to take a step towards feeling less isolated. Everyone is welcome, no matter your age or background. Together, we’re making loneliness less common and helping people rediscover the joy of companionship, one activity at a time!

A happier, more connected life might be just one friendly chat away.

A Day at the Beach: Our Sunny Southend Adventure

This month, we took our clients on a fantastic day trip to Southend, and it just happened to be the hottest day of the year so far! We’d been planning this outing for months, and our amazing activities manager, Rikisha, put together a perfect itinerary for everyone.

Despite the heat, our service users were in great spirits and excited to visit Southend-on-Sea. The journey was a bit long, and some were a little nervous at first, but as soon as we saw the sea, everyone instantly relaxed.

We started with a leisurely walk along the beach, soaking up the beautiful views and the fresh sea breeze. After exploring for a bit, we headed to a local café for some much-needed fish and chips. What could be better on a perfect British summer day? We all enjoyed a lovely lunch together, sharing stories and excitement for the rest of the day.

After lunch, we went back to the beach to digest our food and take in the lively atmosphere of Southend. The trip went off without a hitch, and our clients shared how happy they were to have experienced such a day. Many of our clients hadn’t been to beach in many years, and were so grateful to have been taken.

This day out was more than just a trip; it was a chance for our clients to enjoy something special and feel part of a community. We’re already looking forward to planning our next day trip because a visit to the sea was exactly what everyone needed!

Celebrating health and community at Capable Communities’ annual Healthy Living Event

In June, we hosted our annual healthy living event, and it was a wonderful day! It was lovely weather and we had a fantastic turnout, we aimed not only to promote a healthier lifestyle but also to ease social isolation among older adults. Planned and executed by our talented Activities Manager, Rikisha with the help of the rest of the team, the event was filled with fun, laughter, and a sense of community.

We kicked things off with a seated yoga session that left everyone feeling blissful and relaxed. Then, our multi-talented Director, Steve Porter, led a very engaging creative writing workshop. This session brought out some hilarious storytelling that had everyone laughing!

After a short tea and snack break, the lovely Nazerene took the stage for an interactive singing session. The atmosphere was electric as some of our clients even got up to dance. Spirits were high, and even the staff couldn’t resist joining in for a little dance.

With our appetites worked up, it was time for lunch. We enjoyed a delicious, healthy, Indian-inspired feast that everyone loved!

In the afternoon, Ricky led a chair-based exercise session, which was a perfect way to help digest our lunch. Finally, the event wrapped up with an inspiring motivational talk by Nayesh, which left everyone feeling uplifted and positive.

Our Healthy Living Event isn’t just about promoting a healthier lifestyle; it’s also a wonderful opportunity to combat social isolation, especially among older adults who might be less inclined to meet in a group setting. We were thrilled to see so many people come together, enjoy themselves, and connect with each other.

We can’t wait to host this event again and continue our mission of fostering a holistic approach to life while providing a great time for our clients. Thank you to everyone who joined us and made the day so special!

Capable Communities New Activities Launch!

In June, we kicked off our new schedule of activities with a cozy launch event at Flash Musicals theatre. It was a relaxed afternoon where our team and members gathered to chat, enjoy some board games, and share a few tasty bites. One of the highlights? A group of our wonderful clients whipped up homemade pizzas, all cooked to perfection on a neat little pizza BBQ!

We took our feast outdoors, soaking up the fresh air, and were treated to a surprise dhol performance that had many of us up on our feet! The day was filled with fun, laughter, and a real sense of community—just the kind of afternoon that helps us get to know each other better.

We’re thrilled about the new activities on offer and can’t wait for more days like this in the future!

What exactly is ‘Social Prescribing’?

Have you ever wondered exactly what social prescribing actually is? If so, don’t worry – you’re not alone! It’s a relatively new concept that’s making waves in the UK’s healthcare system.

Think of social prescribing as a way for your doctor to prescribe more than just medicine or medical treatments. Instead, they can “prescribe” activities and services that help you stay healthy and happy. It’s all about looking at the bigger picture of your health – your social connections, mental well-being, and overall lifestyle.

How Does It Work?

Here’s how social prescribing typically works:

  1. Referral: Your GP or practice nurse might suggest social prescribing if they think it could help you. This could be for anything from managing a chronic condition to dealing with loneliness/social isolation or stress.
  2. Meeting the Link Worker: You’ll then meet a link worker – these folks are great at listening and understanding what you need. They’ll spend time getting to know you, your current lifestyle, your interests, and what might help you feel better.
  3. Finding the Right Activities: Based on your conversation, the link worker will connect you to local activities or services. This could be anything from exercise classes and art groups to gardening clubs or volunteering opportunities (like what we do here at Capable Communities!)

Why is Social Prescribing a Good Thing?

There are plenty of reasons why social prescribing is gaining popularity:

  • Improves Mental Health: Getting involved in community activities can lift your spirits and help you feel more connected. Whether it’s joining a dance class or a book club, staying social is great for your mental health.
  • Boosts Physical Health: Being active is crucial, especially as we get older. Social prescribing can help you find enjoyable ways to keep moving, which is good for your body and mind.
  • Builds Confidence: Trying new things and meeting new people can boost your confidence and self-esteem. It’s never too late to make new friends or pick up a new hobby!
  • Eases Pressure on the NHS: By addressing non-medical issues that affect health, social prescribing can reduce the number of GP visits and hospital admissions. This helps free up medical resources for those who really need them.

What is the Future of Social Prescribing?

The NHS is planning to hire thousands of link workers across the UK to help more people benefit from this holistic approach to health all over the UK. It’s a sign that healthcare is evolving to include more than just traditional medicine and considering a more holistic approach.

Capable Communities is constantly evolving and improving its service to better assist our clients,. We take feedback from our service users regularly and ensure we are meeting their needs. Our activities roster is continually growing and adapting to the needs of our service users to ensure they are feeling engaged and excited to attend!

A little update from Capable Communities

Capable Communities has been bustling with activity in the first quarter, with numerous events and gatherings for our clients. Our Christmas party in December was a big hit, enjoyed by all who attended. Despite the winter chill, we’re pleased to report that the majority of our elderly and vulnerable clients continued to participate in our activities, showing their enthusiasm for the social events and the essential support provided through our social prescribing surgeries.

Our seated yoga and exercise classes have proven to be both enjoyable and beneficial, even while seated, keeping everyone engaged and active. Adding Bingo to our weekly lineup on Thursdays and Fridays has been a real crowd-pleaser, bringing excitement and joy to our clients as they shout out “bingo!” with glee. It has quickly become a highlight of our week, lifting spirits all around.

Our exercise class runs every Monday from 1-2pm.

Our Thursday Healthy Living Club has become immensely popular, thanks to its packed schedule and the warm, hearty lunch provided for all attendees. This combination of activities and a shared meal ensures that everyone leaves feeling both satisfied and content.

We’ve also recently added Bingo to our roster of social activities which is a hit with our clients! The thrill of shouting our ‘bingo!’ is a sure dose of dopamine and playing this game has really lifted the spirits of everyone taking part. This is definitely one of the highlights of our week!

We’re proud of the positive impact we’ve had on our clients’ lives so far and look forward to continuing to serve our community with dedication and enthusiasm in the months to come.
